Google quietly limits the number of files users can create and save in Drive

Google Drive now has a restriction on the amount of files users can create and store.

According to sources, Google Drive customers are now only permitted to create a total of five million files. According to Google spokesperson Ross Richendrfer, this most recent modification aims to ensure "strong performance and dependability" while also guarding against potential system abuse. Users will be notified when they have hit their limit, and they may contact Google support if they have any problems, claims Richendrfer. Five million files may seem like a lot for one user to upload, but other people have uploaded more than that. The IT company reportedly failed to notify the impacted users in advance of the newly implemented limit. Last Monday, Drive unveiled a brand-new function called "search chips" that lets users filter results in the online application by file type, owner, and last edited date. This comes as a Reddit member recently complained that Google has unexpectedly put a restriction of 5 million items on users' Drive accounts. Users began receiving "Upload Failed" alerts on February 14 for all actions, even making an empty folder, as a result of this action. According to a Google Workspace spokesperson, each user is limited to producing a maximum of 5 million objects on their Google Drive in order to ensure constant performance and dependability. A few users will only be affected by this change, the spokesperson continued, and she suggested deleting some files to fix the problem. According to a report on Google's problem tracker, people who have a lot of files are finding it very difficult to delete millions of objects, which is having a big impact. Tens of thousands of users who depend on it for everyday operations have been disrupted by this change, which has reportedly had a significant negative impact on one UK user's animal health business. Some users are also questioning why Google did not offer any guidance if there was a hard limit in place. The execution of this modification also seems to be having problems, as some users report being unable to create new folders even with only one million items.
